Driving in Portugal
There are a number of basic rules you must be familiar with before you make your first journey in a car in Portugal.
The following is not an exhaustive list. We will give you a summary at the arrival meeting but the following will help you with your first journey:
The Portuguese drive on the right.
There is a requirement for you to carry your rental contract, driving licence and photographic identification (usually passport) in the car whenever you are using it.
You must ensure that no child under the age of 12 travels in the front passenger seat at any time.
Minimum age for hiring vehicles is 23 and you must have held a full licence for 12 months.
It is an offence to carry more passengers in a vehicle than it was constructed for.
Traffic fines are paid to the police at the roadside.
Ensure you ask the car hire company what fuel your car takes. Diesel is Gasoleo and Gasolina is petrol.
